Although OS X doesn't have too much to offer in the way of customization, you can find numerous third party tools for this purpose. A good example is Plaster, which gives you the possibility of personalizing files and folders with your own pictures. The application has a straight forward design and it is very easy to use. Even inexperienced users will be able to customize their folders without any effort.

Applying a picture over a file or folder can be done almost instantly. All you have to do is drag and drop a picture over the application's compact user interface, after which you have to do the same with the file or folder you wish to customize. This will replace the standard icon of the file or folder with the selected image.

It is also possible to use the icons of installed apps over folders. Instead of dropping an image over the user interface, you can drop an app. Furthermore, the application lets you drop an entire pictures folder over its interface. This will display a random image from that folder, along with options for using the currently displayed picture or selecting another one.

Another possibility is to drop a file or a folder over the interface, while holding down the Shift button, to use its icon. This is particularly useful if you wish to restore a file or folder to its original state. The application places a few extra options at your disposal, which can be found on a drawer menu. You can use them to crop the image, round the new icon's edges, to make it look like an iOS app and more.

Pros

The application is lightweight and easy to use. It can replace the icons of folders and various file types. It is also possible to use the icons of installed apps.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to mention. With Plaster's straight forward and easy to understand functionality, you can change the appearance of your files and folders quickly and effortlessly.
